It happens to everything…

By |September 10th, 2026|Categories: The 'Mules... Ani-mules|

For various reasons, I have been struggling with my chores over the last several weeks. However, routine made things go smoother. For example, when taking the lambs to their pens in the morning: graham crackers. Yeager literally will walk in your shoes on the way. About every 30 feet... piece of graham cracker. This worked for two months. And then it didn't. I drank Coke from 13 years of age until I was about 36. Then I stopped and switched to Mountain Dew. At least I lasted more than a couple puny months. We have moved on to a strategy [...]

Yes. I’m kind of pathetic…

By |August 16th, 2026|Categories: The 'Mules... Ani-mules|

Tiffany hates it when I say it this simply, but our lambs grew up in our house. She feels it brings up images of the lambs running wild and mass amounts of urine and feces around the house. That last part was not the case, but the truth is, especially for Maple, that they lived in the house. It was quite a while before we were comfortable letting Maple outside by herself. She just followed us around the house, and tried to eat the indoor plants if we turned our back on her. As a result, the lambs are more [...]

Chicken Nuggets

In the picture above, one can see Laverne in essentially her favorite roosting spot. Well, that is her favorite roosting spot unless she is broody, and then virtually nothing will get her out of a nest box. When she does come out of her brood box. When she leaves the box, everything has to be done in a hurry and she is clearly clucking about being late for a very important date like the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. As wonderful as it was to watch her raise her chicks (which rather quickly grew larger than her), there were [...]

A Lamb of God

By |April 5th, 2026|Categories: The 'Mules... Ani-mules|

"I thought people would find it really impactful if Maple walked down the center aisle and onto the stage when I talk about The Lamb of God be lead to His crucifixion during the sermon on Good Friday." Those were the words (essentially) that were said when the Pastor at Tiffany's church asked about the possibility of including my little ewe in the service. I was fairly apprehensive about it. It took a while to convince Maple that a halter was not a death harness. There was no need to scratch at it with her hoof. No need to bellyache [...]

Spring has Hatched… early?

By |April 1st, 2026|Categories: The 'Mules... Ani-mules|

In case you are unaware, bantam chickens like Laverne are famous for frequently going broody. Well, they are famous if you are someone who likes to regularly hatch eggs, they are infamous if you want eggs, and don't want to deal with a chicken who is an emotional wreck for a month or so. Laverne goes broody a lot. Over the years I have simply removed her eggs, and taking out the liner in the nest box, if she actually decides to go broody in the nest box. She has found other places around the house that were very dangerous [...]

Learning until I Die…

By |March 30th, 2026|Categories: The 'Mules... Ani-mules|

A few years ago, having learned from my frequent Gator rides, I decided, and eventually convinced Tiffany, that we should raise sheep as a source of income as well as meat for us and others. How hard could it be? I see large flocks of sheep in large pastures by themselves, smaller flocks in smaller pastures... Sheep and goats are everywhere. I'll get to that strangeness another time. At this point after taking with people and seeing how the sheep are managed, I figured this should be easy. I read several books cover to cover. I took a few online [...]

Pigs in Zen

By |March 24th, 2026|Categories: The 'Mules... Ani-mules|

This second set of pigs are progressing along just as well as our first set last summer. The differences in weights may force us to change the date of processing, though. The weights are coming in where are heaviest hog is looking about three weeks older than the smallest. Granted, Number 6's pronouns are he/him, and Number 2's pronouns are she/her. That is what I was old. I don't want to get in trouble for misgendering. They share the same bathroom anyway, and everyone is pretty comfortable with that. Number 6 is the hog in the picture. He is coming [...]
